Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
George and Lennie are migrant American workers - the one alert and protective, the other strong, stupid and potentially dangerous. This is the powerful story of their relationship and their dreams of finding a more stable and less lonely way of life.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointed   September 6, 2010
S. Moynihan (United Kingdom)
Sorry to buck the trend but I was completely underwhelmed by this book. I found it too short to develop the characters. I could not relate to the Lennie character at all. To do the things he did would require the physique of a silverback gorilla although he clearly could not match its intellect. I just could not muster any sympathy for him, I felt much more sympathy for the dog, which created an interesting parallel. The book raises interesting issues, hope and dreams, racial segragation, euthanasia but there is more time spent describing the scenery than really exploring them

Not a book I will be reading again.

5 out of 5 stars Tell it again, George . . .   August 9, 2010

It's easy to see why Steinbeck's classic has been the subject of study for so many years; it's a master-class of literary form. Clean prose and simple storytelling, no added unnecessarys. Even the metaphor is unfussy.

But Steinbeck's true gift lies in characterisation and his understanding of dialogue. When his characters speak and act they betray themselves for who they are. The reader listens and sees, gleans a past from the characters' voices and gestures. The power of the novel comes from the intimacy the reader has with these characters, and it's a testament to Steinbeck that in such a short book he reveals so much.

Everyone should meet Lennie and George at least once, and if you do, you'll never forget them.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing happens   July 10, 2010

If you want a book thats overhyped, dull and thinks alot of itself but fails to deliver; buy this book.

Its short(thankfully), absolutely nothing happens and then it ends abruptly and quite predictably.
