5 out of 5 stars Successful Meditation   August 28, 2010
Mrs. Joyce B. Oyle
This book was recommended to me by a Clinical Psychologist who, prior to Pain Management Clinic, was helping me to cope with severe pain. Although at times the book was a little 'heavy going' it is very useful to now have on my bookshelf for referral. The CD which accompanied the book is extremely helpful - I use 'Body Scan' every day and am now moving on to other forms of meditation. Although this form of help has not made the pain disappear, it has certainly helped me to cope much better. I find it invigorating.

5 out of 5 stars Beats a Stiff Upper Lip approach!   August 23, 2010

I am halfway through this book and it has already changed me for the better. I tend to be a bit self-sufficient and try to sort myself out, I often see such books as self-indulgent, fluffy or simply hard to read. This book is so easy to read and just hits the nail on the head for me. I can identify with how they describe things and don't find the exercises (so far) too hard to do or feel too silly doing them.
If you are the sort of person who only remembers the negative things said to them - even if they're from years ago - or if you are always worrying in advance about things which never happen, then this book will help you. I like the common-sense approach as it suits my earthy and quite grounded personality which simply doesn't identify with anything too unconventional!

5 out of 5 stars The Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself From Chronic Unhappiness   August 6, 2010

I have read quite a few books on mindfulness recently and for someone suffering from depression who doubts reading any book will really help them, think again. The book explains exactly why 'thinking' about depression, only makes the depression worse and rather than offer a 'cure' for depression, this shows how mindfulness is a tool for sufferers of depression to make it possible to live with and control it, rather than let the depression control them (and how they live). Just remember to read this book MINDFULLY!

5 out of 5 stars Practical, clear and compassionate   July 23, 2010

As well as being useful to those who are recovering from depression, this book is also useful to anyone who wants to learn how to live a richer and more balanced life. It has been written in a clear and compassionate way, with descriptions of practical techniques, poems, stories and real examples from everyday life that anyone can relate to. Despite all this, it doesn't have a patronizing tone.

Mindfulness isn't an easy thing to learn for most people, but the authors write in an encouraging way and make it manageable by requesting the reader to adopt the techniques bit by by into their everyday life.
