Attractive but tedious June 12, 2010 Karen Baker (UK) An attractive, colourful text with an invaluable CD of worked solutions, but where is the real-life context? Statistics is such a dull subject when presented as a series of methods, as in this text, but this could be so different: real-life statistics are fascinating, especially when you use data relevant to sixth formers about crime, health, sex, drugs or about the wider world. An opportunity missed in an otherwise decent series.
Excellent introduction resource May 13, 2010 Mr. T. Berriman (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Packed with examples and questions, and building on each previous concept to introduce the next, this book is an excellent introduction to basic statistics. The provided CD contains a digital copy of the book (viewable through a proprietary viewing software only), and copies of the answers from the book in PDF format.
This book covers the following areas:
Measures of Location (Mean, median, mode)
Measures of Dispersion (variance, standard deviation, quartiles and percentiles)
Coding
Various graph representations of data (box plot, stem and leaf, histogram(
Probability
Correlation
Linear regression
Discrete random variables
Normal distribution
The only downside I felt is that occasionally it would have been nice to see some more of the working out in the answers rather than just the final answer, in order to help understand when I got the occasional question wrong! Nevertheless I already have the next book in the series - Edexcel AS and A Level Modular Mathematics - Statistics 2 - on my shelf ready for me to work through!
awsome book ....very colourful May 9, 2010 S. Aziz (UK) i haven't used the book as such...but my son says it is so easy to follow that he can teach himself the subject.... he also likes the fact that it is colourful and vibrant... had it been b/w he would have not have liked it as much i think....
S1 Textbook May 3, 2010 K. Sivagnanam (HW, UK) The book is the reason why I'm understanding S1 a whole lot better. I had the CD before, but using the laptop made me just want to go on the Internet all the time. The book's exercises are perfect for practice, and with the CD comes a solution bank, showing you how to work out the answer which helps a lot. A definite recommend.
Best S1 textbook for this course March 25, 2010 U. Jeyabellen Very useful textbook. Explains everything clearly and succinctly. An essential book for the S1 module
